Now that the children are grown and out of the house – or nearly so – retirement doesn’t seem so distant as it once did. Or you may have already transitioned from full-time work into what has turned out to be an even busier life.

Do you remember the story of Rip Van Winkle?  He slept so long . . . through so much. He missed a large chunk of his lifetime. We shudder to think something like that could happen to us. But sometimes all the talk of the “Bad” and “Worse” things going on around us take away our last ounce of joy and leaves us drained of satisfaction and energy. Bad news abounds, and ways to hear it are ever increasing.


There has been a lot of talk about a devastating flu sickening thousands around the world. Many have opted for a shot (or two) to reduce their chances of illness. Reports of virus that can wipe out my computer, a sleeper that returns again and again, and notices of hackers, arrive on my computer in frightening numbers (especially to those of us who are all but computer illiterate). There is a growing epidemic of teens on drugs, teen pregnancies, and texting while driving. Cars are being recalled. War is spreading. Our taxes are getting higher. Our jobs are moving abroad. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Bad news is, and will ever be, before us. We all do what we can, shielding our kids, trying to protect our teens, and praying for protection and peace in a world of chaos.  Will this madness ever stop, we wonder? What’s a Christian to do?

Take a break! When you’ve done all you can, when bad news threatens to undo your quest for inspiration and joy, it’s time to look in another direction. Where to go? Let me invite you to join the growing group of writers and readers who are building a better world through the new web site, www.renewedandready.com. Get the word out that God is alive! He is in charge of the world, the weather, and so much more. God is a children’s advocate, friend of teens, and lover of gray-haired ones. In a world of horror and chaos, God does not sleep, he does not slumber.

AWAKE! Writers, readers, (you who desire to make a comment or build a happier world), encourage a fellow traveler. . . .  Help us share good news.
